The Culture of Finance–Why Financial Innovation Failed
The Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission is meeting today in Washington to hold hearings on the recent financial crisis and economic meltdown. The Commission will ask Wall Street’s top brass–Lloyd Blankfein of Goldman Sachs, Jamie Dimon of JP MorganChase, John Mack of Morgan Stanley and Brian Moynihan of Bank of America–questions about what went wrong. What the Commission really needs to do is ask what is wrong with Wall Street’s entire culture of finance. The populist rage, from both left and right, at Wall Street is not due to specific actions taken by banks and bankers but at the rise of a speculative, short-term, transactional, culture that rewards individuals with enormous bonuses. This trading culture, over the past 15 years, has replaced a different financial culture which was relational, focussed on the long-term, investment, and, most importantly, aimed at economic growth for many stakeholders–corporations, employees, and the nation as a whole. The goal of the Commission, and of Congress, should be to replace Wall Street’s short-term, transactional, trading culture of finance with a long-term, relational, investment culture. This isn’t difficult

Who should be responsible for social media?
Not influencer relations or analyst relations, but mainstream marketing communications should manage your firm’s social media. That’s the outcome of a small-scale poll we ran over the last half of 2009. Our unscientific survey aimed to gather some opinions, and the overall view is that social media need to be centralised rather than in a

The 3-Step System to Finding Clients Online in Less than 24 Hours
Social Media Marketing is as easy as 1-2-3: Figure out who your target audience is. Find them online. Connect with them. Most people are good at figuring out who their target audience is (#1) and have good people skills to manage relationships successfully (#3). They only struggle at finding their target audience (#2). The good news is that finding your target audience online is extremely easy. I’ll show you how I’d go about finding potential clients online if I sold Harley Davidson merchandise. How to Find Potential Clients on Forums Search Google for “[keyword] forum”. Some variations: “[keyword] discussion board” and “[keyword] discussion forum”. Use BoardTracker and BoardReader to find forums.

Free Government Grants May Be Expensive
With last year’s advent of President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus package, including $50 billion aimed at alternative-energy initiatives, applying for grants has become the rage for high-tech startups. I applaud the initiative, and encourage startups in this direction, but there are costs. In the US, many entrepreneurs see grants as “free money,” since they are not loans and don’t have to be repaid. A grant is not an equity investment, so the entrepreneur doesn’t have to give up a stake in the company either. Typically they can be used to fund product development and commercialization that would otherwise require outside investors. A good place to start is the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, which is a lifeline for high-tech startups. Another is the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiencies (DSIRE), which controls state energy efficiency and clean energy grants. Grants start as small a few thousand dollars, but can provide millions of dollars in capital to new ventures.

2008 HP-EDS Merger in Top Ten Business Deals of 2009
Keeping abreast with the world is certainly a difficult job, especially now with social media, blogs and other such sources all over the place; it’s becoming difficult to know exactly where to look. I myself have different favored sources of information , including those for news headlines, and social media, that I search regularly. On one such occasion, I came across the Top 10 Business Deals of 2009 from TIME.com. With regards to outsourcing , the item included in the top business deals for 2009 was the HP (NYSE:HPQ) – EDS deal . HP acquired EDS on May 2008 for $13.9 billion, it was listed in 2009 because, even though the deal was made in 2008, it started paying dividends last 2009. This past year, there’ve been lots of different companies signing mergers left and right. With tech companies alone there’s been Xerox (NYSE:XRX) and ACS (NYSE: ACS) ($6.4B), Dell (NASDAQ:DELL) and Perot Systems (NYSE:PER) ($3.9B) and HP (NYSE:HPQ) and 3Com (NASDAQ:COMS) ($2.7B). And even though this is true, the results of these deals still remain to be seen. With the HP-EDS deal, the results are already out and going down to the nitty-gritty of it, HP would’ve performed dismally this 2009 if they hadn’t acquired EDS. According to the 4th quarter results of the company for 2009, it was their ‘solid performance in Services’ largely stemming from the EDS merger that allowed the company to attain ‘record profit’. The acquisition of EDS by HP marked the company’s transition from a product-oriented company into a service provider, and by doing so; HP has managed to acquire more business, placing them right on the heels of the Big Blue, IBM (NYSE:IBM). With other IT companies largely following in HP’s steps this past 2009, and still ongoing really, prospects for Tech outsourcing companies’ mergers and acquisitions are very high and still climbing. However we’ll all have to wait and see whether the other deals that came through will lead to bigger profits for the corresponding companies this 2010. By and large, I’d say TIME hit the mark by choosing the HP EDS deal as one of the top business deals of 2009. This deal marked a new direction for outsourcing by tech companies and paved the way for many of the different contracts by HP EDS and other companies that we’ve all been reading about this past year. 2009 could have been a better year for HP EDS, but if you think about it, it could’ve been much worse. Alsbridge doubles-down on data-rich consulting with TAG acquisition
We’ve had a huge amount of debate concerning the future direction of outsourcing advisory services, and today, we can exclusively reveal a sea-change in the advisor industry landscape with Alsbridge’s acquisition of TAG, the leading life-cycle expense management advisor for network services. Essentially, this is the first genuine coming-together of IT and network-connectivity sourcing services within an advisory model. While most traditional outsourcing advisors are firmly-rooted trying to maximize cost-efficiencies for their clients through lower-cost labor offerings in IT and BPO, they often overlook the additional savings on the table they can generate for CIOs through smarter sourcing and management…

IDEO Alumni Begin To Lead. Move Over McKinsey
I’ve been tracking a few alums from IDEO recently and it’s clear they are starting to lead major institutions around the world. Bill Moggridge, of course, co-founder of IDEO, is about to take over as director of the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum. And Mat Hunter, a former partner at IDEO, has just been appointed Chief Design Officer for the British Design Council. Jeneanne Rae, founder of Peer Insight, a major services innovation consultancy, is an IDEO alum. And so is Alex Kazaks, whom I met in Singapore recently at a Design Thinking symposium. Alex is now at–guess–McKinsey! He’s helping with their innovation and customer insights practice. Let’s graph the movement of IDEO alums out into the world. If you know of other IDEOers who have left the sanctuary of creativity, let me know and we’ll plot their movement.

LPO for Law Firms
by Matthew Banks Boston based consulting firm Vantage Partners has published a White Paper, aimed at law firms, entitled Easy Mistakes to Make When Making Decisions About LPO . The Paper contains several pertinent market observations and useful recommendations for law firms, both at a practical and strategic level. I have selected a handful for comment (text copied from the Paper is in italics ): In-house law departments are leading the way in the exploration and experimentation with LPO. And even where law firms are getting involved… Most law firm experience is centered around serving a particular client who has insisted in the use of a lower cost resource for some of the work. This is indeed true for most, but not all law firms. We are seeing more law firms folding LPO into their offerings and into their model. Recent examples include the Allen & Overy offshore document review option and the move by Simmons & Simmons to set up a core team in India . Most of this activity is from U.K. based firms. In addition, a number of US AmLaw 200 firms have set up either formal or informal LPO “investigatory committees”, as they conduct a due diligence process aimed at selecting one or more preferred LPO providers

Business and IT alignment is getting worse and data/information is the reason
I have this recurring sensation that I’m working in two increasingly different universes. Discussions with business managers are different to discussions with IT managers on one hand. On the other, discussions with people who understand web architecture (meaning solutions driven from the user’s perspective) are very different to a discussion with IT folks. It’s not that either side is wrong, they are just standing in the same place and looking in different directions, and that place is data, if you look towards the computers, or information, if you look towards the users. Let’s start with a relatively old piece of research by Gartner published at the beginning of the year. It’s on their public website so I think I can share it with you. It’s a worldwide survey of more than 1500 CIOs and look at what they said very carefully. Unless I am mistaken every priority on the business side, with the exception of cost cutting, is about front office activity designed to help a business to win customers and grow revenues. Now look at the technology priorities

I am Not Good at What You Do, I Need Your Help
This title is a quote from a recent Business Week article by entrepreneur Andy Dunn, aptly named “ To Recruit the Best, Admit Weaknesses .” In my view, if every CEO and hiring manager followed this advice, as well as good hiring practices, their business would move a lot faster and smoother. Of course the first step here is admitting that there are things you don’t know, and identifying what they are. Too many executives let their ego stand in the way, either in admitting that there might be things they don’t do well, or in identifying and communicating specific job requirements. The second step is to avoid a whole host of interviewing and hiring mistakes that have been documented many times by human resources professionals. Here’s a tongue-in-cheek summary of ten big ones to jog your recollection: “I’m not quite sure what we need, but this guy sounds like a miracle worker.” The message here is that if you don’t know exactly what help you need, you probably won’t get it
