Searching for the cloud? Then look to the Highlands…
My earliest memory of outsourcing was ringing to complain about a utility bill and getting a polite, but calmly authoritative, Scottish girl at the end of the line. I knew immediately that I wasn’t going to get a ton of mileage with my quest for justice that day… We’ve spent a lot of time discussing outsourcing locations here, and one we’ve overlooked is Scotland. And it’s not because I’m a Brit and the Jocks don’t like us very much – it’s simply the fact that they don’t make a great deal of noise about what a stellar location they have….

Wish You Could Invest in Shanghai’s Stock Exchange? Think About Mumbai…
© As the economies of India and China become more and more intertwined, and as the two countries focus more and more on competing with each other, a little context can create some perspective. I found a piece of that context recently in a blog post at 2point6billion, and I found it mildly surprising…Mumbai may be on the way to overtaking Shanghai as a financial hub in the coming years based on data revealed by the Financial Times which shows that the Bombay Stock …

Every Startup Needs a Positive Exit Strategy
If you startup is your dream, why would you want to think about an exit? It’s going to be so successful and so much fun that you don’t need to think about what comes after. Wrong. There are two very real and practical reasons why you need to plan an exit: Outside investors want to collect their return. Remember that equity investments are not like loans with interest

Test the Startup Lifestyle Before Founding One
For those of you who want to get in on the ground floor of a new venture, but haven’t yet worked up the nerve to start your own, begin with a job at a startup. But first you should ask yourself if you are prepared for the realities. Working for a startup is not a career choice, but more of a lifestyle. The long-term opportunities may be large, but near-term paychecks will be small, compared to large companies in the same industry. Stock options, if you get them, won’t help you pay the mortgage for a least a couple of years, and the value then is totally unpredictable.

Electronic Manufacturing Services Trends
© mfabbriIn a recent article published in EMS2007, Eric Miscoll, of Charlie Barnhart & Associates, discussed the health of the Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) industry. EMS is a mature business that has seen tepid growth, due to overcapacity and a slow, but steady, move toward bringing some high level manufacturing back in-house. Growth forecasts for the EMS industry are weak – between 0% and 7.8% for the next three years, primarily due to the issues described above. The article argues that, until there is …

Be Proactive to Survive Due Diligence
If your startup is great enough to get a term sheet from angel investors or a venture capitalist, the next step for the investor is to complete the mysterious due diligence process . This is the last step of the process, where surprises in the evaluation of the management team, documentation, and personnel problems can derail the investment. Some startups do nothing to prepare for the due diligence process, assuming the people and business plan documents will speak for themselves. Others stage elaborate “training” sessions, to “assure” that everyone tells the same story.

Indian Outsourcers Get Shivers As Local Rivals Push Up
A new trend is rapidly developing on the current global IT market – instead of sending all projects to offshore locations like India, emerging local rivals are becoming more and more attractive for big outsourcing customers. Let’s analyze the reasons why. Globalization imposes tougher competition on the market, solely performance and capacity are no more enough, and even cost issues presently lose ground as the key differentiating factor. Customers seek quality, innovation, and value to their business. That is exactly what rivals in emerging outsourcing destinations like Central and Eastern Europe are staking on and are eager to provide. An increasing amount of companies are looking closer at local vendors who are winning through mature software engineering processes, reputation, and IT service quality. This is also recognized by leading analyst firms, including Everest

Guest Blogging: How to Reach “Unreachable” Audiences
Let’s see if you’ve been paying attention… What’s my favorite word? If you said “steak” you were close, but the answer I was looking for is “LEVERAGE”. Text Messaging has no Body Language
Whether it’s a business or personal interaction, multiple studies show that as much as 50-90% of the communication is nonverbal. That means that people who are addicted to text messaging and email may be sending only half the message, and receivers often misinterpret even that half. Sure, there are many cases where a 10-word text message, or 140 character tweet will communicate a simple message more efficiently than a face-to-face discussion
