Internet Freedom Is Not a Universal Value, Secretary of State Clinton

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s speech on the universality of Internet Freedom is a wonderful speech that I personally applaud but it is seriously flawed when applied to China and to Google in China. Absolute internet freedom is a value widely shared among hundreds of millions of North Americans, Latin Americans and Europeans but not among the vast, vast, vast majority of Chinese

PEs find it hard to raise money despite rebound

Private equity players investing in India are having a tough time convincing investors — both domestic and overseas — to put money into their funds. This is despite stable economic growth, buoyant stock markets and a favourable investment climate. Continuing credit crisis in the US and Europe, coupled with fear among domestic investors to invest in an illiquid asset class, has made private equity fund-raising an uphill task. Logging a near 60% fall, net PE mobilisation has declined from Rs 1,944 crore in 2007 to Rs 792 crore in 2009 (till January 15, 2010), according to data collated by PE research firm Venture Intelligence. The number of PE funds hitting the road to raise money has halved from 30 in 2007 to 15 in 2009.

The Supreme Court Votes Against Innovation

The 5 to 4 vote by the Supreme Court to allow corporations and unions to use their general funds to directly support political candidates is really a vote against innovation and economic growth. It is a vote for Old Technology Against New Technology, the Big against the Small, the Established against the Entrepreneurial, the Well-Connected against the Insurgent. Big corporations,in particular, will now have the means to game the legislative as well as regulatory systems in their favor. They will be able to focus the flows of tax-payer money to their industries and have the government subsidize their companies. The US government has already become a pay-to-play pit of corruption. The only difference between what happens in Washington and every state capital and what happens in Asia or the Middle East is that America has legalized corruption in the form of lobbying while other countries have not

Brainstorming Is More Than Ideation

Most people think brainstorming sessions are all about ideas — much in the same way that Wall Street bankers think life is all about money. While ideas are certainly a big part of brainstorming, they are only a part. People who rush into a brainstorming session starving for new ideas will miss the boat (and the train, car, and unicycle) completely unless they tune into the some other mighty important dynamics: 1. INVESTIGATION: If you want your brainstorming sessions to be effective, you’ll need to do some investigating before hand. Get curious. Ask questions. Dig deeper. The more you find out what the real issues are, the greater your chances of framing powerful questions to brainstorm and choosing the best techniques to use. 2.

Do Your Keywords STINK?

A lot has been written on keyword research. This is the criteria I use to analyze keywords and decide whether they’re worth pursuing. Do They Convert? This is the most important factor to consider. Before doing SEO, it’s always a good idea to do a PPC campaign and test your keywords. I can guarantee that half of the keywords you choose by doing keyword research will not make you any money. Don’t waste a year doing SEO for them.

New Technology Ideas are the Easy Part

I’m often approached by people who claim to have invented the next big thing, and ask me how much it’s worth, or complain that they can’t find an investor who will fund it. The honest answer is that ideas and new technologies are worth nothing, outside the context of a specific business plan that meets a market need for a fair price. Invention is the process of creating a new technology.

Poll Results Released on Cloud Computing from Integreon’s Virtual LegalTech Webinar

by Jeff Fehrman Craig Ball , Tom Morrissey and I recently discussed The Challenge of Preserving and Collecting Evidence in a Cloud for a CLE webinar hosted at Virtual LegalTech . For those not familiar with Virtual Legaltech, it is ALM’s online version of the well known LegalTech New York and LegalTech West Coast events. One key difference though is that Virtual LegalTech is free to attend for qualified registrants. Cloud Computing and its eDiscovery Implications is a Hot Topic Our cloud computing webinar was the best-attended session of the day with nearly 300 “live” attendees. Subsequently, another 100 viewed the replay . The strong attendance relative to most in-person or webinar eDiscovery topics highlights that cloud computing, and social networking too, are a hot topic these days. Certainly over the past several months, the news media has been overflowing with reports on the subject, including recent decisions for the adoption of Google’s cloud-based services by the cities of Los Angeles and Orlando , and by Rentokil , a company with operations in 46 countries. During the webinar, we asked three survey questions to see how the legal community views cloud computing. All were presented during our “live” session
