Which Comes First, Focus on Profit or Growth?

A question that I often hear debated these days is whether a new startup should focus on growth or profits. First of all, the glory days of “dot.coms” are gone, when investors “didn’t care” about profitability, and all the money went to growth. In the long run, everyone wants both profitability and growth, but the question is still which comes first. Most startups and investors I know don’t have unlimited funds, so the first question they should ask and do ask today, is “When is your company going to be profitable (self-sustaining)?” Of course, growth is implied in that equation, and is also required for prescription drugs without prescription maintaining a sustainable competitive advantage. The challenge is not to undermine growth by a blind focus on profits. You might sell one of two of your widgets for $1M each, entering profitability immediately, buy drugs online without prescription but then die because you can’t grow sales at that price. I think you will find that most investors will relate to the following formula for keeping the right perspective and getting the profit versus growth balance right: Pick an idea that has the potential to make money. That means it solves a real problem for real customers who are ready and able to spend real money. The number of current potential customers is large and growing. Solutions that may be viewed as “nice to have” or “satisfies a higher-level need” won’t get funded.

PE activity may soar; buyouts to dwindle

However, buyouts are likely to dwindle, say major PE players in the country. If You Want Investors, Don’t Say ‘Research’

I still get business plans, looking for an investor, that say all too clearly that the first goal of the new business is to do research and development (R&D) on some promising new technology, like superconductivity or cancer research. Investors are looking for commercial products to make money, rather than R&D sunk costs, so your investment hopes are sunk as well. In fact, the term ‘research and development’ covers a continuum of activities, so you need to use a more precise term to optimize your funding considerations.

Deciding on the Right Outsourcing Destinations (Onshore and / or Offshore)

As the only professional services provider of legal, discovery, research, and business solutions serving clients from four continents, a question I am often asked is “what is Integreon’s global strategy?” This seems to be a topic of interest for the market recently and has prompted me that it is probably time for a blog post about onshore versus offshore services. Obvious reasons for a global delivery footprint include cost and availability of talent, language capabilities, disaster planning Buy Generic Levitra etc., which I discussed a year ago in my post Choosing the Right Outsourcing Destination in Changing Times . Each of our locations has a role in our overall strategy. India has a large talent base of high quality, lower cost knowledge workers, especially in areas such as legal, accounting, and research, which is where Integreon originally built those professional services capabilities during our start-up years. The Philippines provides a similar talent and cost base to India, with arguably closer ties to the US, while also allowing clients to mitigate the business continuity risk of being over-concentrated in India. In China, we are able to satisfy increasing demand for knowledge and language skills that could not be gathered without local presence. In the UK and the US, where we have most of our clients, we have found that nothing builds trust better than being served by experienced staff onshore – or even onsite. Our South Africa operations serve clients who require collaboration with people close to UK time.  We are just about to open an office in Tokyo to serve our Japanese clients and hope to open in Eastern Europe and South America in the future, in response to client requests for language capabilities. So far, this has been a hugely successful strategy, helping us grow from $19M per year in 2006, the year in which we launched our first onshore operations (we believe thoughtfully anticipating the demand for onshore capability), to over $100M this year.

Act As If!

Do you know buy prescription drugs item.php?id=252″>Buy Amoxil what the opposite of a “professional” is? A “con-fessional.” And, at the risk of being unprofessional, here’s mine: One of the great secrets to manifesting anything on planet Earth is to act as if — to proceed in the spirit of already having succeeded — or what Steven Covey refers to as “beginning with the end in mind.” Why is this important? Because you already are what you profess to be, even if it’s not apparent yet. This state of mind, which is the polar opposite of doubt, could easily be construed to be some kind of con game. But it’s not.
