Think Margaret Sanger (birth control) or Mahatma Gandhi (non-violent), as opposed to the leaders of the Cancer Society or Goodwill Industries. Whether the objective is to generate profits or social capital, the common element for all entrepreneurs is the recognition that there is a problem which needs solving, or there is an opportunity to improve the status quo. The vision is always to be a change agent, to invent and popularize new approaches, and to persuade people to take a leap forward.

Sloppy documentation and reporting of these expenses is an open invitation to an IRS audit, which is the last thing you need or can afford during the busy startup period. Expense accounting is just one of the key record-keeping requirements for a successful business: Expenses and income. You’ll need a check register, a cash receipt system, and a record of bills. I don’t have an MBA. I used to fear that this would put me at a disadvantage in starting my own company, but now I’m convinced that it may be the other way around. More importantly, as a parent or mentor, what should you advise young potential entrepreneurs about getting an MBA? By Ernst H. Gemassmer We all intuitively believe in maintaining personal and business contacts, but most of us don’t do well in this area, despite the advent of social networking. I’d like to share my personal experience with you, to prove my point. My professional life started with a BS in Chemistry, an MA in International Relations and a Master of Business Administration. This clearly represents a good education with numerous contacts around the world. Personally I got married, had three children and eventually divorced. Over the years we had lived in different parts of the US and abroad, meeting all the usual challenges of raising kids, changing jobs, buying and selling houses and trying to stay fit. I was totally focused on family and jobs.

I deal often with early-stage startups, and many of these don’t have any customers yet (but wish they did), so it’s not surprising they don’t have a formal customer service program in place. More disturbingly, others do have customers, but the customer service program consists of informal haphazard problem resolution efforts. The right time to put a formal customer service program in place, with measurements, is right now. Ideally that would be with the first sale of your product or service to a customer. You can’t manage what you don’t measure, and customer satisfaction these days is one the most critical success factors to every business.
