The other face of outsourcing

We normally view outsourcing as dishing out jobs to a third country. The reason for outsourcing, normally by private companies is to cut cost in doing business. It is one of the easier things to do, in both good and bad times. It sounds all dandy. You don’t have the headache of employing new staffs to do things that are normally mundane in nature. There is a certain size in a company where it becomes unmanageable, and employing new people is fraught with danger in that they might not be able to do the job, or that they are so capable of covering up mistakes that the company is taken for an expensive ride! In contrast, outsourcing is done with little fanfare and most of the time without the knowledge of lower ranking staffs. There lies the beauty; job done without incurring uncertainties. For CEO’s, outsourcing is a little game that puts back money to the system. At the end of the day, the job gets done and the accounts show positive territory.

Deciding on the Right Outsourcing Destinations (Onshore and / or Offshore)

As the only professional services provider of legal, discovery, research, and business solutions serving clients from four continents, a question I am often asked is “what is Integreon’s global strategy?” This seems to be a topic of interest for the market recently and has prompted me that it is probably time for a blog post about onshore versus offshore services. Obvious reasons for a global delivery footprint include cost and availability of talent, language capabilities, disaster planning etc., which I discussed a year ago in my post Choosing the Right Outsourcing Destination in Changing Times . Each of our locations has a role in our overall strategy. India has a large talent base of high quality, lower cost knowledge workers, especially in areas such as legal, accounting, and research, which is where Integreon originally built those professional services capabilities during our start-up years. The Philippines provides a similar talent and cost base to India, with arguably closer ties to the US, while also allowing clients to mitigate the business continuity risk of being over-concentrated in India. In China, we are able to satisfy increasing demand for knowledge and language skills that could not be gathered without local presence. In the UK and the US, where we have most of our clients, we have found that nothing builds trust better than being served by experienced staff onshore – or even onsite. Our South Africa operations serve clients who require collaboration with people close to UK time.  We are just about to open an office in Tokyo to serve our Japanese clients and hope to open in Eastern Europe and South America in the future, in response to client requests for language capabilities. So far, this has been a hugely successful strategy, helping us grow from $19M per year in 2006, the year in which we launched our first onshore operations (we believe thoughtfully anticipating the demand for onshore capability), to over $100M this year.

all the crazy shit i did tonight, those will be the best memories

i don’t think i can find a phrase more appropriate than this to encapsulate our week. perhaps its all these little things that help the work week pass faster. mon and i have come up with names for the weekdays: miserable mondays (for obvious reasons) terrible tuesdays (the week has still barely started) weird wednesdays (cos its midweek and you’re not sure exactly how to feel) terrific thursdays (friday is drawing near) fantabulous fridays (the weekend is here!) anyway, that aside, terrible tuesday was spent getting super smashed at KPO, totally not funny. white wine on an empty stomach is really not a good idea. but i do feel as though we are slowly integrating into this whole working class thing, i reckon it’s possible that i could potentially get used to it. darren and i was saying that when we start working for real, we’d probably end up alcoholics =/ those in white monny and jojo couldn’t really take that many pictures considering how we all got kind of drunk. thursday was spent at KPO as well, this time, girls only!!

2010 is the Year of Transition, Gartner Says

On the threshold of the publication of the 2010 edition of Gartner’s annual CIO Survey, where 1600 of CIOs were asked about their plans and priorities for the year, Mark McDonald, GVP of Gartner Executive Programs, shared some of its findings. According to the survey, 2010 will be a time of transition from recession to recovery economically, strategically from a focus on efficiency to productivity, and technically speaking from heavyweight to lightweight technologies. But all the while IT budgets will remain tight. Only 6% of the polled CIOs see actual real growth coming in 2010.

The Origin of Medical Coding

What is medical coding and who are medical coders? Well, everyone does know about the importance of accurate medical data while providing quality healthcare service. The professional medical coder is one of the main persons involved in the capturing of this critical and accurate medical data that needs to be delivered in time. Computerization of medical billing process is done only after medically coded details specify all the various processes / procedures/ therapies/ undergone by the patient at the health care provider’s premises.

The Future of Automated Document Review

A Posse List blog post earlier this year, Computer-aided document review has arrived (12 January 2010), comments on a thought-provoking e-discovery study described in an academic journal article.  The premise of the underlying study, which compares computer classification of documents with manual review, is that automated systems are capable of categorizing documents at least as well as teams of human reviewers in an  e-discovery setting.

R&D Partnerships Should Become More Strategic

A recent study conducted by Zinnov on Software R&D globalization revealed that only 5% of this R&D spend is currently being spent on outsourced partnerships, which means about 95% of the R&D is made by companies in-house. This presents a tremendous growth opportunity for companies providing Outsourced Product Development services . We attended the webinar on ‘Globalization Opportunities in Software Development for Enterprises and ISVs’ where Zinnov experts shared further research results. Vamsee Tirukkala, Co-Founder & Managing Principal, Zinnov, commented on the trend that companies leverage 3rd party global centers mainly for cost savings and access to relevant talent.
