IBM vs. Indiana: Big Blue Makes Indiana See Red

The Big Blue is making the state of Indiana and its residents see red. In a series of events that began with the signing of a very profitable outsourcing deal between the state of Indiana and technology outsourcing company IBM, the deal has now ended up with IBM (NYSE:IBM) filing a countersuit against Indiana late last week in an affair that began as, well, somewhat good, to bad and now, to worse. The deal began with the best intentions in mind, from Gov. Mitch Daniels , who envisioned that the deal would make, “America’s worst welfare system better for the people it serves.”  As early as May 2006 , there was already much talk over the proposed deal. IBM and Accenture (NYSE:ACN) were the original contenders and at the time many concerns were raised over the two companies’ “spotty track records”. IBM and Indiana signed the $1.16 billion deal on December 2006, with IBM leading a group of buying online drugs ten companies, the group included now Xerox cheap drugs (NYSE:XRX) subsidiary, ACS. The contract was a ten year agreement to manage and process the state of Indiana’s applications for food stamps, Medicaid and other welfare benefits for its residents. What follows is a sordid affair of failed attempts at the automation of the welfare system and software problems that plagued the deal, leading to delays in food stamp processing and loss of benefits

Cognizant Outlook Bright; Emerging Ahead of Competitors

The big three of Indian outsourcing companies have a lot to evaluate, as their lower ranking rival Cognizant (NASDAQ:CTSH), is slowly starting to emerge ahead of the pack following the company’s first quarter results.  This comes with the continued albeit slow rebound of the outsourcing market this year. Days before the release of Cognizant’s results, analysts were already forecasting a strong showing for the company with estimated revenue of $939.1 million or a revenue growth by up to 26% , especially with the solid results received from its other Indian rivals, Wipro (NYSE:WIT), Infosys (NASDAQ:INFY) and Tata Consultancy (NSE:TCS). Upon the release of the company’s first quarter results for 2010 last May 4, many were pleasantly surprised by the results posted by Cognizant, with a 34% increase in profit surpassing everybody’s expectations.  The company earned $151.5 million, up from a profit of $113.1 million in the first quarter of last year.  Revenues rose 6.3% to $960 million , compared with the prior quarter. Cognizant is even now expecting a $55 million increase in revenue for this quarter and fiscal 2010 revenue of at least $4.1 billion, up 25% compared to 2009. Performance is strong for the company, as it continuously beats estimates quarter after quarter, signaling continued improvement in the company’s operations.  Case in point is Cognizant’s last year revenues which increased at least $200-500 million dollars more than its rivals. Aside from that is the company’s laudably low attrition rate with a 12.4% rate on a twelve month basis.  The company increased its workforce last quarter by more than 7,100 people indicating the strength of the company’s business for the quarter.  Notably, last year, the company gave 200% bonuses to its top performers after its strong growth last year.  As of last quarter, Cognizant’s workforce numbered at around 85,500. Eyeing the trend that Cognizant has been following, it seems plausible that the company will reach its 2010 end of year forecast, and will pleasantly surprise us all once again by being ahead of estimates.  As Kaufman Bros analyst Karl Keirstead so ably put it, “Cognizant should still be able to outgrow its larger peers in 2010.” If the company continues its current performance, then yes, Cognizant just might.

First Quarter 2010 Part 3 of 4: Notable Contracts Are Won

For the first quarter of 2010, there were some notable outsourcing contracts established, albeit they’re not the ‘mega deals’ of old, but substantial they are still. It was data and advisory firm TPI , who projected on the 18th of March that the global outsourcing contract volume is set to increase this 2010.  The Economic Times even projects that $1 billion worth of outsourcing contracts are headed for India this year.  These contracts, as Everest Group’s Gaurav Gupta stated are typically in the range of $50-100 million.  He further adds that Indian IT services vendors currently have some mega outsourcing contracts in the pipeline. One such contract is Punjab & Sind bank’s contract with Indian IT Company Wipro (NYSE:WIT) on the 24th of February, wherein the two companies signed a 10-year comprehensive IT outsourcing contract.  A deal that had previously been awarded to Satyam (NYSE:SAY) .  The contract featured prominently in the news due to the failure of the previous contract with Satyam. But what we estimate as one of, if not the largest contract for the quarter is the $200 million IT outsourcing contract of Accenture (NYSE:ACN) with Starwood Hotels and Resorts for the development, maintenance and running of the applications of the hotel.  The deal was signed on the 15th of March.  The deal sits high on the list of substantial deals for this quarter as Starwood Hotels (NYSE:HOT) is one of the biggest hotel and leisure companies in the world, including, Westin, Le Meridian and Sheraton. There are other equally notable deals that have gone through this quarter, including contract extensions such as CSC’s (NYSE:CSC) contract extension with United Technologies Corporation which is projected to add over $1.5 billion in value to the existing contract in a five-year period that was announced on the 18th of March; and buying prescription drugs online without a prescription Lockheed Martin’s (NYSE:LMT) contract extension with NASA, which has an estimated value of approximately $230 million. The contracts are just beginning to pour in.  This March, the amount of contracts being won has been steadily increasing with the economy’s recovery.  It is expected that the pace and value of the contracts will increase further by year’s end and perhaps we will see the ‘mega deals’ return once again.
